This Vibrant Blue Is the Perfect Partner for Fall’s Rich Neutrals

Get the scoop behind J. McLaughlin's new signature shade.

The moment the leaves begin to turn each autumn, you can count on the fashion world following suit, with woodsy shades of brown and tan taking over from summer’s brights. Perhaps that’s why we were so inspired when we caught a glimpse of J. McLaughlin’s fall catalog, featuring an exciting—and unexpected—star: the brand’s new signature color, JMcL Blue. Vibrant and saturated, it’s the perfect counterpart to the season’s rich caramels and umbers, adding a just-right jolt to classic menswear materials like tweed and khaki.

The standout hue, which the brand’s co-founder and chief creative officer Kevin McLaughlin describes as “a strong, Mediterranean blue azure,” is the centerpiece of a new campaign created with the help of Trey Laird, a creative director and fashion industry legend who’s created iconic ads for Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford, Calvin Klein, and Tiffany & Co., to name a few. Laird dug into the J. McLaughlin archive for inspiration, bringing back the brand’s classic logo from the ’80s and turning up the volume on the color that’s decorated its packaging and store awnings for decades. “It’s modern, fresh, and optimistic,” explains McLaughlin—and perhaps most importantly, he adds, “It looks good on everyone.”

Read on to see some of our favorite pieces from the brand’s new collection—and a few ideas for bringing it from your wardrobe into your home.
