New Year or not, we’re always excited about smart storage. Our friends at Remodelista are helping us start 2019 right with countless inspiring ideas in their book “The Organized Home.”
Here are some of our favorites.
SORT IT
Uniformity telegraphs cohesion. Group like with like and use matching storage items. Lining up identical things, such as wooden hangers (white for shirts, natural for pants), wire baskets and cardboard binders, is a trick used by architects and designers to create a sense of order.
CORRAL THE FOOTWEAR
We’re proponents of shoe removal on arrival: It keeps the floors—and hence the whole house—cleaner. A selling point of baskets as shoe storage is that they’re portable, and a French market tote adds a touch of Gallic style.
THINK BEYOND THE KITCHEN CABINET
An industrial metal cart holds a lot of tableware and can be wheeled directly to the table for setting. This example, filled with creamware pitchers, mixing bowls and platters, belongs to London chef, shop owner and bon vivant Alastair Hendy.
STOWE THE UNMENTIONABLE
A toilet cleaning kit needn’t be cringeworthy! Choose a non-plastic brush, like this Iris Hantverk birch-handled option with easy-to-clean bristles (from Amazon), and stow it in a pleasing container. Try a terra-cotta planter, complete with a handy drain and saucer, or an Ikea enamelware pitcher on a Fog Linen tray.
BRING IN OLD WORLD ACCESSORIES
In this laundry room, a fusto (a traditional Italian dispenser for olive oil, vinegar and wine) functions as a dispenser for detergent. Just add an enamelware measuring cup for good measure.
