Johnson Hartig of fashion label Libertine created his own Renaissance masterpiece with La Fôret Panel Set for Schumacher, a faux tapestry wallpaper that took two years to draw from scratch. He put a modern spin on it by pairing it with a striped Moroccan blanket and a zany mix of patterned pillows. Art by Jacques Villeglé (left) and Johnson Hartig (right).

The Key to Energizing Old-World Motifs? Mix It Up!

July 10, 2025

From Flemish Verdure tapestries to Jacobean crewelwork to ottoman crescents, old-world motifs feel surprisingly au courant when recast in fresh settings. The key to transporting the look from the 17th century to the present day? Set the backdrop with bold pattern-on-pattern pairings, layer in some modern art, and finish with a few sculptural accents to play up their graphic appeal.

Garnet red is the unifying force in this tableau featuring disparate patterns: Iksel’s Iznik Chintamani & Crescent wallcovering and luxe Jacobean Garden Velvet (coming soon), both from Schumacher. Lamp by Kimille Taylor. Tulips in the Wind (left) and Iris Bulb No. 59 (right) by Wayne Pate.
