Design Inspiration du Jour: Simply Perfect Hotel Bathrooms

October 30, 2019

Once upon a time, a divine hotel bathroom meant bright nickel fixtures and acres of polished marble, but a recent crop of properties prove that earthy understatement is every bit as luxe. Best of all, they’re packed with ideas to apply at home for the ultimate endless staycation.

Naturally Neutral

At Portugal’s Quinta da Comporta, a restricted palette puts the visual emphasis on the room’s materials, such as the rough hewn-wood mirror, the uneven ceramic tiles and the handmade plaster walls.

Zen Master

Spare, pared-down elements — a simple ladder for hanging towels, a vanity of thick wood slabs, a mattress for a moment of repose —contribute to the deeply tranquil vibe at Italy’s Capofaro. The graphic concrete floor gives the scheme just the right amount of punch.

Northern Beauty

At Copenhagen’s Hotel Sanders, venetian-plaster walls in a mysterious grey mix with classic fixtures and a striking wainscoting of marble strips for an effect that is soothing and spare.

Urban Oasis

A subtle play of pattern is achieved in a variety of ways — mixed tile shapes and orientations on the floor and walls, the slat design of the modern-rustic barn door, a subtly studded mirror —at New York City’s The Beekman.
