On Set: The Philadelphia Story

May 21, 2015
The first time I saw The Philadelphia Story, I was in my early 20’s. I was captivated by Katharine Hepburn’s strong character, Tracy Lord, and the titillating relationship she had with her ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, played by Cary Grant.
I saw it again recently and yes, the characters still enthralled me but this time I couldn’t take my eyes off the gorgeous house where most of the action took place.  It is a bit of a throwback but also wonderfully inspiring. Pulled together without trying too hard, there is an ease to it that invites the characters to really live in it.
That’s a hard thing to pull off but there is one American decorator who’s a master at doing just that—Bunny Williams. A few years ago, I photographed a project that Bunny did for a young family in Delaware that had all the wonderful qualities of that house in The Philadelphia Story.  As you can see from the photos below, there is nothing precious about it. The beautiful decoration never overpowers, allowing the family to take center stage.
